Sentinum 295 a.C. Sassoferrato 2006, 2300 anni dopo la battaglia. Una città romana tra storia e archeologia

Sentinum is one of the most important archaeological sites of Marche, the modern Region that covers part of the ancient Piceno. Recently the site has been awarded the Archaeological Park status. The name of the ancient city evokes crucial events in the history of Rome, as the so-called ‘Battle of the Nations’, fought in 295 BC, and the battles between the partisans of Octavian and Antony, during the middle of the I century BC. In recent years, the renewed scientific interest is reflected in the publication of two volumes, the first containing the results of recent researchs and this second containing the Proceedings of the International Conference held in Sassoferrato in 2006. This second volume collects twenty-three papers by historians, epigraphists, archaeologists, and historians of ancient art, dealing with matters related to the ancient city of Sentinum and its territory. The volume is divided in five sections: history and archaeology; scattered finds from Sentinum; iconography and iconology; city and territory; works in progress. The last two papers, given by Mario Torelli and Gino Bandelli respectively, outline the situation of Italy at the time of the battle of Sentinum, and summarize and interprete the whole knowledge on the matter available today. The last section of the book consists of ten posters, which analyse some specific topics, ranging from the exegesis of tabulae patronatus to the new proposals for the enhancement of the site.

Sentinum è uno dei siti archeologici più rilevanti della Marche, cui è stato conferito lo statuto di Parco Archeologico. Il nome stesso della città antica evoca eventi cruciali per la storia di Roma, come la cosiddetta ‘battaglia delle nazioni’ del 295 a. C. e le guerre tra i partigiani di Ottaviano e di Antonio negli anni Quaranta del I secolo a. C.. Il rinnovato interesse scientifico di questi ultimi anni si è concretizzato in due volumi, questo che contiene gli Atti del Convegno, svoltosi nel 2006, e l’altro che raccoglie i risultati delle nuove ricerche condotte dal 2002 al 2005. Questo volume contiene ventitre saggi di storici, epigrafisti, archeologi e storici dell’arte antica, tutti relativi a temi collegati alla città antica e al suo territorio. Le sezioni sono cinque: storia e archeologia, Sentinum dispersa, iconografie e iconologia, città e territorio, lavori in corso. I due saggi conclusivi sono di Mario Torelli, che delinea la situazione dell’Italia alla vigilia della battaglia di Sentinum, e di Gino Bandelli che sintetizza e interpreta il panorama delle conoscenze a oggi disponibili. Segue una sezione poster con dieci brevi contributi, riguardanti altrettanti temi specifici che spaziano dall’esegesi delle tabulae patronatus alle proposte di valorizzazione del sito.
