Sentinum. Ricerche in corso I

Sentinum is one of the most important archaeological sites of Marche, the modern Region that covers part of the ancient Piceno. Recently the site has been awarded the Archaeological Park status. The name of the ancient city evokes crucial events in the history of Rome, as the so-called ‘Battle of the Nations’, fought in 295 BC, and the battles between the partisans of Octavian and Antony, during the middle of the I century BC. In recent years, the renewed scientific interest is reflected in the publication of two volumes, this volume and a second containing the Proceedings of the International Conference held in Sassoferrato in 2006. This first volume collects all the papers summarizing the results of the researches carried on the site until the mid-twentieth century, and those of the most recent archaeological investigations conducted (by the Author) from 2002 to 2005 and regarding especially four issues: the geomorphology of the territory; the magnetic survey within the city walls; the analysis and interpretation of the stratigraphic sections – highlighted in the urban zone, because of the cut made in 1892 across the ancient town for the construction of the railway Fabriano - Urbino –; a first review of the construction techniques of the town. The volume will then anticipate some data about the chronology of the different phases of the city, about the urban planning and the structure of the central area, adjacent to the Forum, where the remains of two temples, a compitum and a circolar fountain have been found.

Sentinum è uno dei siti archeologici più rilevanti della Marche, cui è stato conferito lo statuto di Parco Archeologico. Il nome stesso della città antica evoca eventi cruciali per la storia di Roma, come la cosiddetta ‘battaglia delle nazioni’ del 295 a. C. e le guerre tra i partigiani di Ottaviano e di Antonio negli anni Quaranta del I secolo a. C.. Il rinnovato interesse scientifico di questi ultimi anni si è concretizzato in due volumi, questo e l’altro che raccoglie gli Atti del Convegno, svoltosi nel 2006. Questo volume contiene alcuni saggi che riassumono i risultati delle ricerche condotte sul sito sino alla metà del XX secolo e i risultati delle recenti indagini condotte dal 2002 al 2005, riguardanti in particolar modo tre tematiche: la geomorfologia del territorio in cui sorge la città antica; le prospezioni magnetometriche condotte all’interno del circuito murario; l’analisi e l’interpretazione delle sezioni stratigrafiche occasionali messe in luce nel centro urbano a causa del taglio effettuato per il passaggio della ferrovia Fabriano – Urbino nel 1892; una prima rassegna delle tecniche costruttive presenti nel sito. A conclusione, vengono anticipati alcuni dati circa le fasi di vita della città antica, il suo assetto urbanistico complessivo e la struttura della zona centrale, attigua alla piazza forense, nella quale sono stati rinvenuti i resti di due templi, un compitum e una fontana a pianta circolare.
