BAGNO VIGNONI The mill park: the story of a project The idea to build an archaeological Park of documentary nature on the mills of BagnoVignoni came from the Detailed Plan of the BagnoVignoni area, which was drafted in 1997. The guidelines contained in the Project relating to the Detailed Plan are reviewed and studied in-depth to arrange the environmental and architectural structure of BagnoVignoni. The Detailed Plan does in fact reveal the peculiarity of a "milling pole" that is an integrated part of the inhabited center. The type, technology and unique setting, the blending of these aspects and components from a socio-economical, historical, documentary, geological and environmental viewpoint makes it so that the implementation of the Mill Park is not configured as an episode of local nature, but as a relevant model both in Italy and Europe. These last assertions found a precise acknowledgment thanks to the Raphael contest, which was launched by the European Union and which regarded the restoration and development of the European cultural heritage in the field of industrial archeology with the restoration project of the first mill; the more extensive one, entirely hypogeal. The entire program included, in addition to the building work, a series of interventions aimed towards the cultural development of the museum-graphical preparations, cultural initiatives - such as specific studies on Mills -, an International Study Convention, the publication of a catalog to publicize the work and a website. The project that was presented was approved and the European Union provided funds in the amount of 250.000 Euros, which covered 43% of the entire restoration and development operations. While the project was being drafted, the program was extended and included the restoration of two hypogeal mills, a thermal structure from the 18th century and a dilapidated tower. The operations, for which there was a need to acquire the area from its owners, Barabino - Chigi, were implemented in December 1999.
