These introductory notes to the annexed Hydrogeological Scheme of central Italy briefly descrive: the hydrogeological characteristics illustrated on the three Maps, the criteria and methods followed in the research, the aims of the Scheme. Previous studies and the quality of the available hydrogeological data are considered. Relationships between geology and regional hydrogeology are stressed. Methods used to identify hydrogeological structures and to evaluate effective infiltration are exposed in details. The importance of the base flow index in this regional hydrogeological study is emphasized. The balance of hydrogeological structures are compared with hydrogeological setting and the amount of groundwater resources is considered. Tese topics are widely treated in Englysh in the legend of three Maps.
