This book analyses political and diplomatic relations between Japan and the EU since World War II. Diplomatic ties between Japan and Europe are often considered weak from a historical perspective, especially in comparison to Japan-US relations. However, although political relations between the two actors may not have produced significant results before the 1990s, the weight of external variables such as the international system has been crucial in defining relations. This book takes such interventions into account when considering the Cold War years, for example, a period that was marked by countless trade conflicts relating to economy and security.

Abstract

This book analyses political and diplomatic relations between Japan and the EU since World War II. Diplomatic ties between Japan and Europe are often considered weak from a historical perspective, especially in comparison to Japan-US relations. However, although political relations between the two actors may not have produced significant results before the 1990s, the weight of external variables such as the international system has been crucial in defining relations. This book takes such interventions into account when considering the Cold War years, for example, a period that was marked by countless trade conflicts relating to economy and security.
