This study is about the discussed origin and history of the word ‘signorina’ (‘miss’, ‘young lady’). This appellative and allocutive is reserved, traditionally, to (young) women not (yet) married, but actually it tends to be considered politically incorrect. The date its first attestation indicated by the lexicography (1605) is anticipated to 1533. Moreover, the word is studied in its contests of use and in its various meanings compared to ‘signora’ (‘lady’) and to the masculine ‘signorino’.
