This book, dedicated to “the roof”, is part of a series of publications on some themes of technological design, presented in a synthetic form to facilitate their understanding through the connection to the ‘certain’, but often 'unnatural', knowledge of science (Marrone P . and Morabito G., The technology that architects need. How it is built today and (perhaps) it will be built tomorrow, 2008; The attack on the ground, 2010; The structure, 2011, The involucre, 2014). The issue is addressed with the conviction that the complexity of the problems does not change the 'generalist' approach of the project by the architect. Only a conscious understanding of the issues to be addressed can bring the decisions to be made back to unity. For this reason, the information contained in this book, treated as parts of a single knowledge, can guide the training of the contemporary architect. A crucial statement introduces the theme. A series of 'rhetorical questions', with related answers, develop the technical aspects of the design of the roof with the help of intuition. In this way, a panoramic view of the topic is outlined, useful for orienting oneself among the infinite knowledge available and for understanding it in the most natural form with the support of examples and thematic bibliographies. In fact, each 'rhetorical question' corresponds to a project and a related detail to show the reasons and characteristics of the various construction solutions.
