In the Late Antiquity occurred a generalized phenomenon of evident ruralization of the population and of progressive crisis of the urban structures. Given this new situation and keeping in mind the peculiarities of the various regional and local contexts, surviving villas seem to play a peculiar role in relation to the organization of the territory. In the last 20 years there was a fruitful debate which highlighted the dif- ferences existing in different regional areas. It has generally been strtessed a remarkable difference between southern and northern Tuscany. In Tuscany in general the Gothic War marks a starting-point of a slow pro- cess which eventually brought to the establishment of post-classical terri- torial structures.
