On the Relationships between Agriculture and Landscape

L’argomento di questo saggio non concerne le trasformazioni che l’agricoltura apporta al paesaggio reale, ma i cambiamenti che si sono prodotti nel nostro atteggiamento nei confronti del paesaggio coltivato. Per lungo tempo la natura amata e percepita come piacevole, e quindi apprezzata nel paesaggio, era la natura modificata dall’essere umano, oggetto dell’agricoltura o in generale del lavoro umano. Attraverso le testimonianze fornite dalla letteratura, dalla storia dell’arte, e dalla filosofia, il saggio esamina dapprima l’apprezzamento della natura oggetto di coltivazione nell’Antichità e nel Medioevo (parti prima e seconda), poi il sorgere dell’amore per la natura non coltivata, per la Wilderness, e il suo trionfo nell’età romantica (terza parte), e infine il sorgere di un rinnovato apprezzamento dei paesaggi agricoli nel nostro tempo (parte conclusiva). ENGLISH The topic of this essays concerns not the transformations caused by agriculture in the actual landscape, but the changes that have taken place in our own attitude towards cultivated landscape. For a long time the nature that was loved and perceived as agreeable, and hence appreciated within the landscape, was a nature developed by humans, the object of agriculture or at any rate of human labour. Through the documents provided by literature, history of art, and philosophy, the paper examines first the appreciation of cultivated land in the Antiquity and Middle Ages (part 1 and 2), then the rise of love for uncultivated nature, for the wilderness, and its triumph in the Romantic Age (part 3), and finally the rise of a renewed appreciation of agricultural environments in our days (final part).
