The contributions collected in the book are emblematic of the different ways of understanding the relationship between theoretical reflection and design and representative of how different paths can be practiced in research, however absolutely legitimate for the achievement of results. They also demonstrate how the plural articulation of positions, and therefore of research techniques, is a fundamental asset for a scientific community that deals with architecture. For the author, questioning what beauty is possible today for Italian architecture means launching a retrospective look at what the identity of Italian architecture was and how it was built. Deciphering this identity is one of the most frequent exercises of contemporary criticism. The presence of a clear figurative vocation, the evocation of consolidated architectural forms and figures, their recognisability over time, are identity traits that we all unanimously recognize. These add to a centrality of the idea of ​​public space, embodied by forms and types in which the feeling of the community is recognized. For some time this centrality has lost the fullness of its historical forms, but there is still a thread of continuity with the tradition of building, with the expressiveness of the techniques and the evocative value of the materials.

I contributi raccolti nel libro sono emblematici dei differenti modi di intendere il rapporto tra riflessione teorica e progetto e rappresentativi di come nella ricerca si possano praticare strade anche distinte, tuttavia assolutamente legittime per il raggiungimento degli esiti. Essi dimostrano anche come l’articolazione plurale delle posizioni, e quindi delle tecniche di ricerca, sia una ricchezza fondamentale per una comunità scientifica che si occupa di architettura. Per l'autore, interrogarsi su quale bellezza è possibile oggi per l’architettura italiana significa lanciare uno sguardo retrospettivo su cosa è stata e come si è costruita l’identità dell’architettura italiana. Decifrare questa identità è uno degli esercizi più frequenti della critica contemporanea. La presenza di una chiara vocazione figurativa, l’evocazione di forme e figure architettoniche consolidate, la loro riconoscibilità nel tempo, sono tratti identitari che concordemente tutti riconosciamo. Questi si aggiungono a una centralità dell’idea di spazio pubblico, incarnata da forme e tipi nei quali il sentimento della collettività si riconosce. Da tempo questa centralità ha perso la pienezza delle sue forme storiche, ma esiste tuttora un filo di continuità con la tradizione del costruire, con l’espressività delle tecniche e il valore evocativo dei materiali.
