The essay works with the so-called “dispositive of crisis” to investigate the most recent Italian philosophical and political debate on political theology (Tronti, Cacciari, Agamben, and Esposito). This debate could be linked to the recent worldwide revival of political theology as a conflictual terrain for neoliberal economy. In Italy, however, the reflection on political theology dates back to the period between 1970s and 1980s and certificates the use of the economic crises as an art of government. The question today is whether the neoliberal crisis falls within the theological-political paradigm or within a biopolitical paradigm.

Abstract

The essay works with the so-called “dispositive of crisis” to investigate the most recent Italian philosophical and political debate on political theology (Tronti, Cacciari, Agamben, and Esposito). This debate could be linked to the recent worldwide revival of political theology as a conflictual terrain for neoliberal economy. In Italy, however, the reflection on political theology dates back to the period between 1970s and 1980s and certificates the use of the economic crises as an art of government. The question today is whether the neoliberal crisis falls within the theological-political paradigm or within a biopolitical paradigm.
