The birth of modern Italian musicology in the second half of the 19th century is closely linked to German music history. The article tries to identify the old roots of this relationship together with topics and actors. At the same time, the essay illuminates the phenomenology of a historical and cultural process which, on the one hand, brought Italy closer to German musical culture, on the other hand laid the foundations for the development of a strong, mutual nationalism.
