The article analyses a particular aspect of Italian academia, the relationship between Mentor and his pupils, and the creation of "schools" around a Mentor. In particular it analyses how this model, which exists since the Middle Ages, is the main vehicle for academic selection of law professors (but also in other disciplines). It also focuses on the role of academic "schools" in a social group which is based on co-optation and which is characterized for being a reputational market.
