Proust encountered the philosophy of Kant in the philosophy class at the Lycée Condorcet. An analysis of Alphonse Darlu’s course based on the notes taken by Xavier Léon and Proust’s dissertation demonstrate that the student assimilated the Kantianism of his teacher. As an undergraduate student, Proust’s reflection on Émile Boutroux’s teaching on Kant, and his study of the textbook by Janet and Séailles, allowed him to go beyond criticism to attain a Kantianism in which the unconscious moderates scientism.
