The essay is a commentary on § 23 of Kant's Kritik der Urteilskraft. The detailed analysis of Kant's text is guided by a rigorous methodology aiming to clarify the centrality of the Appendix dedicated to the sublime for Kant's aesthetic idealism, namely for the relationship between aesthetics and morality. In this sense the essay represents an innovative contribution in Kantian literature. The work is meant to analyse the mathematical sublime and the dynamic sublime as the basis of a theory of feelings: frustration, fear, the need for security and shelter on the one hand and moral sacrifice, moral sublimity on the other.
