Place-names are efficient and meaningful indicators for the understanding of human landscapes, as the process of naming is based on collective human choices and memories. Among them, hydronyms are a peculiar category of toponyms which can be read through time, with the help of different sources, mainly historical cartography, archive documents and oral sources. The paper aims to present a research methodology, which would start from the historical and linguistic characteristics of the hydronyms in the Ager Romanus, and would go through the geomorphological and topographical reconstruction of the watercourses in a GIS environment, in order to increase the knowledge of the diachronic interrelation man-environment in the area.

Abstract
Place-names are efficient and meaningful indicators for the understanding of human landscapes, as the process of naming is based on collective human choices and memories. Among them, hydronyms are a peculiar category of toponyms which can be read through time, with the help of different sources, mainly historical cartography, archive documents and oral sources. The paper aims to present a research methodology, which would start from the historical and linguistic characteristics of the hydronyms in the Ager Romanus, and would go through the geomorphological and topographical reconstruction of the watercourses in a GIS environment, in order to increase the knowledge of the diachronic interrelation man-environment in the area.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
