In the darkest and most dramatic season of contemporary Latin American history, in the midst of the establishment and repressive action of dictatorial regimes, the Russell II Tribunal for Brazil, Chile and Latin America denounced to the world the ‘serious, systematic and repeated violations of human rights and peoples’ rights' that were being committed. It operated as an international tribunal of opinion, through investigation, evidence gathering, testimony, and submitted the conduct of military regimes to the judgement of an international jury in public hearings. It was also a great transnational movement that involved and mobilised a vast and multiform network of groups and activists in Latin America, North America and Europe: one of the first expressions of the new forms of protest that marked the birth of ‘global civil society’ in the context of the ‘Long Seventies’. It was promoted by the Italian socialist leader Lelio Basso alongside well-known and prestigious personalities such as Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Noam Chomsky, Hortensia Bussi de Allende and many others. For the first time in a comprehensive manner, this book presents the history of the Russell II Tribunal reconstructed through the rich archival documentation preserved at the Lelio and Lisli Basso Foundation.

Abstract
For the first time in a comprehensive manner, this book presents the history of the Russell II Tribunal reconstructed through the rich archival documentation preserved at the Lelio and Lisli Basso Foundation.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
