Informal dwellers characterize Asian, African and especially Latin American metropolis. These settlements present a strong increase in population, a lack of services and public facilities, low urban quality, environmental and social issues, insecurity. Due to this critical situation, the slums regeneration has become a priority of the international agenda, as showed by the SDGs. This work, part of a larger program developed by the University of Roma Tre, the Municipality of Zacatecoluca and the Salvadoran Foundation for development and minimal housing (FUNDASAL), fits into this general framework and will present a proposal for the renovation of El Ramal, one of these slam that’s growing in the ester part of Zacatecoluca city, in Salvador. The study, in particular, focuses on the public space capability in regenerating informal dwellers and transform them into more sustainable and livable neighborhoods, solving social, environmental and economic issues. A large literature review of international best practices and innovative technological devices applied to transform slum into sustainable settlements, deep environmental and morphological analysis of the case study of El Ramal, analysis of the Plan Maestro and other important documents define the ground on with the renovation project has been developed. The proposed project suggests an innovative approach based on actions that, modifying the public space and in particular the ground and the energy and water cycle, improve the urban quality of the whole slum, increasing environmental, social and economic factors. The main results of this work is definition of a strategies that could be applied also in other informal dwellers.
