The research makes a comparison between the “Ellis Island passenger search” database and the rich Historical Archive of the Municipality of Meldola. A “mutual look” between Romagna and Connecticut allows us to reconstruct and narrate an exemplary transnational story between the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean, between Italy and the United States. Sources of archival and statistical nature, in print and photography, private correspondence and public monuments, many digital sources interact. The registry of an emigrant community of about 800 people is rebuilt (between 1896 and 1926), focusing on social and cultural stories of families and family groups through successive generations during the twentieth century. It is a project of Public History that develops between Meldola and Litchfield, recomposing connections, networks and migratory chains that had been lost.

La ricerca si avvale di un confronto tra il database “Ellis Island passenger search” e la documentazione conservata presso il ricco Archivio storico del Comune di Meldola. Una “reciprocità di sguardi” tra Romagna e Connecticut permette di ricostruire e narrare una esemplare storia transnazionale tra le due sponde dell’oceano Atlantico, tra Italia e Stati Uniti. Interagiscono fonti di natura archivistica e statistica, a stampa e fotografica, corrispondenze private e monumenti pubblici, molteplici fonti digitali. Si ricostruisce l’anagrafe di una comunità emigrante di circa 800 persone (tra 1896 e 1926), mettendo a fuoco storie sociali e culturali di nuclei e gruppi familiari attraverso successive generazioni nel corso del Novecento. È un progetto di Public History che si sviluppa tra Meldola e Litchfield, ricomponendo connessioni, reti e catene migratorie di cui si erano perse le tracce.
