Le strade disegnano.../ Streets draw...

To be inhabited a territory first of all needs to be reached and then travelled. Streets represent the first sign of anthropization, the element that allows territory to become a perceived part of the earth, and therefore ‘landscape’. The street offers travelers a particular point of view to observe and, above all, to think about the built and unbuilt contexts: a trajectory and a point of view that are at the same time chosen by man and suggested by the (natural) state of the places, as well as the other elements making up the image and substance of the landscapes. A close link holds together topography, streets and perception, and this condition makes the street system the most important on territory. This system offers a clear key for the interpretation of historical and non-historical contexts, based on the right observation of the landscape. The short essay derives from considerations carried out during the doctoral thesis, concluded in 2016, entitled Rehabilitating the ancient routes’ network to reactualize territory. Strategic actions along the Via Clodia in the landscape of inland southern Etruria, and the successive research, still in progress, and of these proposes a synthesis focused on the importance of the road system.

Per essere abitato un territorio ha bisogno prima di tutto di essere raggiunto e quindi percorso. Le strade rappresentano così il primo segno di antropizzazione, il primo dato che consente al territorio di divenire parte compresa della terra, e quindi ‘paesaggio’. La strada offre infatti a chi la percorre un particolare punto di vista per osservare ma soprattutto per pensare progettualmente ai contesti, costruiti e no: una traiettoria ed un punto di vista che al contempo sono scelti dall’uomo e suggeriti dallo stato (naturale) dei luoghi, così come gli altri elementi che assieme costituiscono l’immagine e la sostanza dei paesaggi. Uno stretto legame tiene assieme topografia, strade e percezione e questa condizione fa sì che quello stradale sia il più forte sistema territoriale capace di offrire una chiara chiave di lettura per l’interpretazione dei contesti, storici e no, che trova principio proprio nella giusta osservazione del paesaggio. Il breve saggio qui proposto deriva da considerazioni portate avanti durante la tesi di dottorato, conclusa nel 2016, dal titolo Il recupero della rete dei percorsi antichi per la riattualizzazione del territorio. Azioni strategiche lungo la via Clodia nel paesaggio dell’Etruria meridionale interna, e la successiva ricerca, ancora in essere, e di queste propone una sintesi focalizzata sull’importanza del sistema stradale.
