It is proposed that, for the purpose of teaching, the uses of comma in Italian can be described in terms of 7 functionally di!erent types, namely the following: 1. Topic comma; 2. List comma; 3. Utterance comma; 4. Non- restrictive adjunct comma; 5. Left Focus comma; 6. Parenthesis comma; 7. Adposition comma. Understanding these functional types should help learners to “filter” their written productions: if a comma cannot be considered as one of the mentioned seven, it is probably a wrong comma. Keywords: Italian, comma, functional classification, teaching.

Abstract
It is proposed that, for the purpose of teaching, the uses of comma in Italian can be described in terms of 7 functionally di!erent types, namely the following: 1. Topic comma; 2. List comma; 3. Utterance comma; 4. Non- restrictive adjunct comma; 5. Left Focus comma; 6. Parenthesis comma; 7. Adposition comma. Understanding these functional types should help learners to “filter” their written productions: if a comma cannot be considered as one of the mentioned seven, it is probably a wrong comma.
