A study was conducted in an Italian school, with a group of students aged about 11, who study English as foreign language, and involved specifically second language writing. The project was conceived after a wide experimental study conducted on the written production of pupils in their mother tongue, which is called Nulla dies sine linea (NDSL). NDSL was based on the fundamental idea that writing, namely hand-writing, is an important element in the elaboration of thinking. The study on second language writing focuses on some specific aspects, concerning the influences of the mother tongue on the foreign language, in terms of interference. As learners in their first stages, our population presented widespread elements of interference in the first phases of the project (both lexical, morphological and syntactical). An analysis is attempted that seems to show a progress towards a higher independence from the mother tongue and a higher level of competence in the rhetoric processes of the target language.
