Il verso di La Fontaine, tratto da Contre ceux qui ont le goût difficile del 1668, è incluso come esergo nel frontespizio e ripetuto come motto ispiratore nella prefazione del secondo volume, francese-inglese, del Royal Phraseological English- French, French-English Dictionary, pubblicato nel 1849, quattro anni dopo il primo volume, inglese-francese. John Charles Tarver, l’autore del dizionario, docente di francese a Eton fin dal 1826, ne ha fatto un’opera innovativa nel panorama della lessicografia inglese-francese dell’epoca, basandosi sulla sua lunga esperienza didattica, sulla padronanza di entrambe le lingue e relative culture e, in particolare, sul riconoscimento del ruolo fondante della fraseologia nell’apprendimento e nell’uso effettivo di una lingua straniera: con modestia non soltanto retorica dubitava però di essere lui il «plus savant». al fine di mostrare la rilevanza del dizionario all’epoca e il suo ruolo innovativo, il contributo illustrerà il contesto in cui fu prodotto e analizzerà i tratti salienti delle combinazioni fraseologiche che ne costituiscono l’essenza e la loro modalità di presentazione in voci selezionate da entrambi i volumi. The title-page verse, taken from La Fontaine’s Contre ceux qui ont le gout difficile (1668), serves as an epigraph to the French-English volume of the Royal Phraseological English-French, French-English Dictionary, and is repeated as a motto in the preface to the same volume, which came out in 1849, four years after the publication of the English-French volume. John Charles Tarver, who had been appointed as a teacher of French at Eton in 1826, authored an innovative dictionary compared to the then tradition of bilingual lexicography. He treasured his long didactic experience, his mastering of both languages and their cultures, and his acknowledging of the basic role of phraseology in learning and effectively communicating in a foreign language: yet, out of notjust- rhetorical modesty, he did not think of himself as «plus savant». To show the dictionary’s relevance and innovative role at the time, this article will outline * Università Roma Tre. 184 the background to its making, analyse the characteristics of the phraseological combinations that capture its essence, and highlight the presentation mode of French and English equivalents in a few selected entries taken from both volumes.
