Abstract

“Call the world if you please “The vale of Soul-making”. These are the words, by the poet John Keats, that in the 1970’s inspired James Hillman to revolutionise with his 'archetypal psychology' the dogmas of Jungian psychology and psychotherapy. A 'cultural movement', as he called it, this 're-animation' of analytical psychology was intended to go beyond the realm of clinical studies and scientific models and to place itself within the Western culture of imagination, intertwining links with the arts and the history of society. Yet, unlike the main psychologies of the 20th century, which have their sources - the German language and the monotheistic Jewish Protestant Weltanschauung - in Northern Europe, Hillman's “revolution” originates in that South, in that Mediterranean world which, in addition to being a geographical, cultural and ethnic place, is also a symbolic one, with its images and references, its sensual and concrete humanity, its gods and their myths, whose metaphors are the main vehicles of expression of the archetypes, the primordial and irreducible forms of the psyche.
