Abstract Equatorial Guinea is the only Spanish-speaking country in sub-Saharan Africa and, for this reason, constitutes an absolutely exceptional case in the panorama of studies on the language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the penetration of the Spanish language in Equatorial Guinea, the characteristics it has and the situation of the studies concerning it.
