Every expression of landscape, every epiphany of place finds its beginning in the territory or in what was once simply described as a country. Today, however, it is impossible to give up the landscapes and places, overstructures that originate from the territory. Referring to the case of the Temple of the Fortuna Primigenia in Palestrina, the essay carries out a reflection on the sense of the territory, the landscape and the place. Precisely, it analyzes the process of transformation that leads from the territory to the genesis of the landscape and then of the place. The acquisition of a critical conscience, which makes us external spectators, has transformed the territory into an aesthetic and visible fact: the landscape. A further step leads to the definition of a place starting from the landscape. This process is triggered by a discontinuity that prevents perception and stimulates memory. Thus, if the first step is carried out with the transformation of the territory into the landscape through the action of perception and memory, the second occurs with the loss of the direct perception of reality. At this moment memory acts alone, invokes the imaginary, made of stratified and now immutable perceptions, and deposits it exactly in the places. Therefore, if the place has always existed as part of the territory, the need for its formulation does not arise as long as reality is present for the people who inhabit it. The need to remember, tell and imagine is felt with the loss of contact with this reality. In this sense, places or, better, simulacrum of real places originate to fill a lack. Through this process, the existence of the place is linked to absence and nostalgia. But the place, to continue to exist, needs to rediscover the vitality from which it originated, to be part of mechanisms of daily life. The essay is therefore combined with an invitation to return to materiality, to the territory, enriched by the meaning of landscape and place.
