The role of lay canonical science in the Church and in legal studies. The essay seeks in first place to identify the current challenges of canonical doctrine. It considers both the most relevant issues of Pope Bergoglio’s Church and the cultural changes that most affect the comparison of canonical science with secular legal science. In second place, it seeks to provide some suggestions regarding the tasks that Canon Law is called upon to perform. Finally, some strategies for collaboration between the different canon schools, and strategies for a stronger presence in the public debate are proposed.
