On the walls of the Carcer, five pictorial phases have been identified that open a new chapter in the medieval history of this monument, when it was transformed into a church. The iconographic themes focus on the celebration of the Princes of the Apostles, and place the church of San Pietro in Carcere in close relationship with the limina apostolorum of the city. The presence of Mary of Mercy, connected to the imago of Peter and Paul, also advances the hypothesis that the church, from the end of the 13th century, housed a confraternity in honour of the glorious Virgin, probably with the support of the Franciscans at S. Maria in Aracoeli. Between the 12th and 14th centuries the church appears to have held an important role as a link between the Capitol and the Roman Forum.
