Reconstructed Proto-Indo_European is an accusative language, but during the twentieth century various scholars have conjectured that it had been even earlier an ergative language. In this essay we deal with such hypothesis of the primitive Indo-European ergativity, trying to show its interest but also the doubts that it raises.
