“Morire è l’essenza della vita”. La Still life di Hillman

"Time stands still, the hands point to the ultimate essence. Dying is the essence of life", as Hillman said from his deathbed. There is, however, another way to stop time, to pursue that still-life that reaches life’s essence: the soul’s work on image, the search for a "true" or "ultimate" image, which is narrated in the long dialogue he had in the last days of his life with the one who bears witness to it here. The theme of Hillman's still-life, his experience of death lived through thought and creation of images, leads to the concept of perpetual transition and transformation at the heart of Hillman’s theory, which is only partly deduced from the Jungian one, and which equates "soul-making" with "image-making." When the imago vera of the psyche is extracted from the false images of the world, death is defeated at the very moment it begins to end the life.

“Il tempo e’ fermo, le lancette puntate sull’essenza ultima. Morire e’ l’essenza della vita.” Cosi’ Hillman, dal suo letto di morte. Ma c’e’ un altro modo di fermare il tempo, di perseguire quel fermo-vita che ne attinge l’essenza ultima: il lavoro della psiche sull’immagine, la ricerca dell’immagine “vera” o “ultima”, narrata nel lungo dialogo avuto negli ultimi giorni di vita con chi ne reca qui testimonianza. La still-life di Hillman, l’esperienza della morte vissuta pensando e creando immagini, riporta al tema del confine tra vivere e morire ma anche a quello della transizione e trasformazione perenne che e’ al centro della teoria hillmaniana, solo in parte desunta da quella junghiana, per cui il “fare anima” e’ “fare immagine”. Estrarre l’imago vera della psiche dalle false immagini del mondo sconfigge la morte proprio nel momento in cui ferma la vita.
