The title of the quintet with two cellos L'uccelliera (G 276), one of the most famous works of program music by Boccherini, is commonly understood as referring to the birdcages the Infante don Luis kept and collected. But the present analysis is more concerned with the strategies of musical representation. The approach tries to understand Boccherini’s work in the light of descriptive music tradition and of contemporary Spanish and European culture, and to contribute to a better knowledge of the style and expressive quality of Boccherini’s instrumental music.
