Starting from the short and succinct titles of Fontane’s novels, which mostly convey a nominal function, it is difficult to imagine how they can generate a semantic surplus of interpretation and meaning. The present article aims to examine the forms of these titles in their ambiguity and semantic polyvalence treating them as independent units of text. Furthermore, it investigates whether and to what extent Fontane’s titles satisfy their connotative function and in what lies their polysemic potential
