In the poem Heliand, the alliterating word pairs verbs lînon and lêstien “to learn and to carry out” and thenkian endi thagôn “to think and to be silent” highlight, respectively, the modalities with which the teaching of Christ must be accomplished and the attitude of the disciples in welcoming the word of their Master. The importance of preaching, as transmission and sharing of the Christian doctrine, is reiterated by means of recurring formulaic structures, which are able to create bonds between different narrative episodes, configuring throughout the poem a perspicuous texture.
