This contribution aims to reconstruct the European Commission’s position on the topic of sustainable development as it has evolved in response to macroeconomic needs, theoretical debates, political interests, and the cultural background of its presidents. What emerges is that, despite various orientations, there has been a clear acceleration towards a vision of environmental sustainability in recent years, which seems to prelude a growing interest in developing a European industrial sovereignty in the field of green technologies. This occurred also as a response to a growing widespread awareness of the effects of climate change.
