The essay explores the complex and controversial issue concerning the Jewish community present in Albania during the years of the Italian occupation (1939-1943). drawing on unpublished documents and the available historiography, an attempt is made to take stock of some of the still open questions. For example, why was the anti-Semitic legislation in force in Italy not exported to Albania? What specific political, economic and social conditions made it possible to save the hundreds of Jews on Albanian soil?
