This article focuses on a fragment of Porphyry preserved by Eusebius of Caesarea (PE XIV, 10, 3 / Porphyry, 246F. Smith). We aim to elucidate the content of this passage, which illustrates Porphyry’s views on common conceptions and their relation to philosophical doctrines. Furthermore, we suggest a hypothesis concerning the place of the passage in Porphyry’s lost treatise Against Boethos. At the end of the article, we outline a parallel between Porphyry’s position and that of Eusebius.
