Central and prototypical variants of coming and going verbs in Spanish and Italian correspond to specific and deictic uses, where a greater ability to mentally project themselves toward the goal of motion on the part of Italian speakers shows up, but such mental shift is also possible in certain cases in Spanish, against what is commonly theorized. Marginal and peripheral variants arise through metaphoric and metonymic processes out of a folk model which is basically shared by both languages, and in which the concept of Interactive Focus is of particular importance. A higher degree of polysemy for Italian lexemes, in which the telicity of sentences seems to play a role, emerges from a quantitative usage comparison between the two languages.
