The Silin Villa, built on the coast west of Leptis Magna in the second century A.D., is an excellent example of a Tripolitan private residence and one on which it is today possible to compile an extensive dossier. Examples of such residences can be identified in the villas located along the coasts of Latium and Campania, as can be seen by similarities in their use and divisions of space, the decorations employed, the symbiosis between built-up areas, green spaces and natural environment. Thanks to the specific rituals related to this kind of domestic architecture (from banquets to entertainments, from bathing to reading), villa life reflects the self-image which local personages – of Punic origin, but fully participant in tte cultural model brought to the fore by the process of integration into the Roman context – wished to convey so as to affirm their own identity and display their social status.

Abstract
The Silin Villa, built on the coast west of Leptis Magna in the second century A.D., is an excellent example of a Tripolitan private residence and one on which it is today possible to compile an extensive dossier. Examples of such residences can be identified in the villas located along the coasts of Latium and Campania, as can be seen by similarities in their use and divisions of space, the decorations employed, the symbiosis between built-up areas, green spaces and natural environment. Thanks to the specific rituals related to this kind of domestic architecture (from banquets to entertainments, from bathing to reading), villa life reflects the self-image which local personages – of Punic origin, but fully participant in tte cultural model brought to the fore by the process of integration into the Roman context – wished to convey so as to affirm their own identity and display their social status.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
