Martin Zeiller (1589-1661) was one of the most productive authors of chorographies and travel manuals in 17th-century Central Europe. He collaborated closely with Matthäus Merian’s publishing house in Frankfurt am Main. Their joint activities started with Itinerarium Italiae Novae et Antiquae (1640). The aim of this paper is to conduct a text-image-map analysis of this book, focusing on the chapter dealing with Rome, and to apply a comparative perspective when considering three topographical books on Rome dating back to the same period.
