The Environmental Humanities, a recent and rapidly expanding field of study, poses new and specific problems. This text briefly introduces the field of Environmental Humanities in the English-speaking context and identifies some methodological issues. It then offers some reflections based on the teaching and research experience at the University of Roma Tre. A possible use of the historical dimension in research is discussed with regard to questions of the interrelation between different disciplines, in particular between philosophy and history. The text concludes with an illustrative reading of the humanistic approach to plant life with reference to E. Kohn’s book, How Forests Think,1 identifying some of its characteristics and problems.
