This article reconsiders the origins of medieval legal literature by moving beyond the traditional focus on glosses and exegesis, central to the historiography shaped by Savigny. Rather than reducing twelfth-century legal culture to the rediscovery of Justinian’s Corpus, it highlights the diversity of genres—procedural treatises, quaestiones, brocarda, summae—and the plurality of centers where law was studied and practiced. Through the analysis of composite manuscripts, or “libraries in a single book,” the article shows how legal texts circulated alongside theological and philosophical works, reflecting heterogeneous cultural contexts. These collections offer insight into the intellectual horizons of early jurists and their readers
