This paper studies some characteristics of Melani’s verse translation (1942) of Lope de Vega’s El mejor alcalde, el rey, published in a context of prose translations of this playwright’s plays. After pointing out the distortions to which the respect of rhyme and metre obliged him, a possible alternative solution is presented and the advisability of maintaining rhyme in translations of golden age theatre texts is discussed.
