Per fiocco e per segno

In Italian the word Fiocco has many different meanings. It indicates the ribbon bow, the cotton ball to spin, the snowflake, the cornflake, a face muscle, etc. and the verbal constructions as fioccare, essere in fiocchi or infiocchettare have been used to describe rhetorical discourses and curvy landscapes, the folds of the soul, the feelings and various material and mental aspects of the world. In every case, the term seems to be linked to the prototypical and etymological sense of lightness, that is the distinctive trait of the Latin verb flo, flas ‘to blow’. In this book the iconic data, the literary attestations, the fashion artefacts and the use of the word fiocco in language for special purposes, as well as in other languages, are collected and analyzed considering its prototypical double shape and its symbolic valence. In summary, fiocco is not an object or a simple decoration. It is a node, but also a solving node. It can be read and understood as much among the formulas of the lemnisks as among the hairstyles and outfits of the most disparate scriptural and iconic sources.

I fiocchi, quelli faticosamente confezionati per la prima volta tra i lacci e i lacciuoli di scarpine e stivaletti e quelli disvelatosi nella loro eterea e cristallinea sostanza in mezzo a una nevicata, quelli vistosamente ostentati intorno al grembiule d’intere generazioni di scolari o di arzigogolate capigliature, quelli amorevolmente arricciati intorno ai nostri più piccoli pacchetti-ricordo e quelli appuntati a decoro di cornici, alberi natalizi o uova e pani pasquali, ebbene quei fiocchi non sono solo allacciature e nodi. In alcune culture non li si riconosce, in altre continuano a marcare quel po’ che rimane dell’antropodiversità e continuano a delineare, via via in maniera diversa, i confini tra forma e sostanza dell’espressione e del contenuto. Queste pagine mostrano come i loro significati si possano leggere e comprendere tanto tra le formule dei lemnischi, quanto fra le acconciature e le mise delle più disparate fonti scrittorie e iconiche.
