Travel, and especially travel in Europe, is a recurring theme in the lives of Spanish American intellectuals, particularly after the former Spanish colonies gained political independence, with different meanings depending on their ideological and cultural backgrounds and specific objectives. In any case, travellers always set out in search of the codes of European culture based on American needs for modernity and progress. Paris is everyone's favourite destination, but Rome is not excluded from the European itinerary. This article examines the journey of the modernist writer Rubén Darío to Rome in 1900, highlighting how it was an odeporic experience in which sacred and profane elements made it more devoted to aesthetics than to tourism.
