The paper contains a summary of the knowledge about the Ponari Nymphaeum in Cassino (province of Frosinone). The vaulted building preceded by an atrium with impluvium was part of a domus of ancient Casinum. It was erected and decorated with floor mosaics including coloured marble inserts and ‘grotto’ wall mosaics containing shells and glass during the 1st century BC. It was then completely redecorated with an opus sectile imitation, probably a late evolution of the IV style. The hypothesis of its belonging to the great senatorial family of the Ummidii Quadrati is intriguing, although not verifiable. The monument’s state of decay is highlighted and an adequate restoration is recommended.
