The contribution is aimed at exploring Chinese vocabulary learning in the light of theoretical notions developed within the fields of semantics and cognitive studies. In particular, it will i) describe the features of Chinese lexical units; ii) introduce the notion of word network and its application in L2 Chinese; iii) illustrate the usefulness of the theories on metaphor and metonymy in vocabulary teaching; iv) describe the relations of polysemy and synonymy in L1 and L2 Chinese and some notions connected to these semantic relations (image schema and radial category); v) draw some implications which will be hopefully useful for the pedagogy of Chinese vocabulary.
