This chapter examines the significance of travel and mobility in Athenian drama, focusing on Euripides’ Melanippē plays. Although ancient Greek tragedy often portrays characters embarking on journeys, Melanippe’s travels from Greece to Magna Graecia represent not only personal mobility but also the interrelation of various Greek communities. By analysing the complex genealogy and myths of Melanippe, this study illustrates how Euripides’ plays serve as dynamic artifacts that engage with the historical and political contexts of their time. From several points of view, the Melanippe plays embody Euripides’ innovative tragedy as it is establishing new links across the Greek world.
