The essay presents Edward Said as a key figure in the emergence of postcolonial studies, reconstructing Orientalism’s critique of the European image of the Orient and of the alleged neutrality of knowledge, through the combined use of Foucault and Gramsci. It highlights the political project of postcolonial studies as a contestation of Western hegemony and a reactivation of subaltern voices. The second part portrays Said as a public intellectual and Palestinian activist, whose work articulates theory, politics, and aesthetic–musical imagination, culminating in the symbolic laboratory of the West–Eastern Divan Orchestra.
