For evolutionary reasons, individuals are endowed with the tendency to critically evaluate the content of incoming messages. Presuppositions divert critical attention because they present their content as something already known, i.e. possibly already checked for truthfulness. Behavioural experiments confirm lesser processing effort for presuppositions as compared to assertions, while neurophysiological evidence is still lacking.

Abstract
For evolutionary reasons, individuals are endowed with the tendency to critically evaluate the content of incoming messages. Presuppositions divert critical attention because they present their content as something already known, i.e. possibly already checked for truthfulness. Behavioural experiments confirm lesser processing effort for presuppositions as compared to assertions, while neurophysiological evidence is still lacking.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
