La Esogeografia, nihil significantia?

In the form of a hypothetical and ironic dialogue between two generations of geography scholars, we reflect on the continuity between the journeys of discovery and exploration made by humanity on Earth. Having the volume of Franco Farinelli The Invention of the Earth as a guide, the debate in the scientific community is encouraged. The article reflects on the continuity between the journeys of discovery and exploration carried out by humanity on Earth, between the attempts to establish its shape and dimensions, on the connected process of understanding the nature and variety of terrestrial environments, with the journeys carried out outside atmosphere and towards extraterrestrial “new worlds”. A continuity that is not linear, gradual and positive development, but an identifiable process. While the broadening of the geographical horizon to the various latitudes, longitudes and altitudes of the Earth was taking place, we cast our gaze (then means of observation, as well as human crews) on the surface of other space bodies. The title summarizes the underlying question: on the basis of the reasoning and examples reported, can we talk about Geography and Exogeography? By the latter we mean the science that studies the relationship between humanity and the extraterrestrial environments towards which it is actually projected.

Nella forma di un ipotetico e ironico dialogo fra due generazioni di studiosi di Geografia, avendo come traccia il volume di Franco Farinelli L’invenzione della Terra, si sollecita il dibattito nella comunità scientifica. L’articolo riflette sulla continuità tra i viaggi di scoperta ed esplorazione realizzati dall’umanità sulla Terra, tra i tentativi di stabilirne forma e dimensioni, sul connesso processo di comprensione della natura e della varietà degli ambienti terrestri, con i viaggi realizzati fuori dall’atmosfera e verso i “nuovi mondi” extraterrestri. Una continuità che non è da intendersi nel senso di sviluppo lineare, graduale e positivo, quanto di processo individuabile. Mentre si verificava l’allargamento dell’orizzonte geografico alle varie latitudini e longitudini e altitudini terrestri, abbiamo lanciato lo sguardo (poi mezzi di osservazione, come pure equipaggi umani) sulla superficie di altri corpi spaziali. Il titolo riassume la domanda di fondo: possiamo, sulla scorta dei ragionamenti e degli esempi riportati, parlare di Geografia e di Esogeografia? Intendendo per quest’ultima la scienza che studia il rapporto fra l’umanità e gli ambienti extraterrestri verso cui di fatto si proietta.
